Hydrogen Evolution Volcano(es)—From Acidic to Neutral and Alkaline Solutions

As the global energy crisis continues, efficient hydrogen production is one of hottest topics these days. In this sense, establishing catalytic trends for essential choosing proper H2 generation technology and material. Volcano plots evolution in acidic media are well-known, while a volcano plot alkaline was constructed ten years ago using theoretically calculated binding energies. Here, first time, we show that volcano-type relationships largely maintained wide range pH values, from to neutral solutions. We do energies on clean metallic surfaces experimentally measured overpotentials. When exposed high anodic potentials, can be boosted or significantly impeded, depending type metal electrolyte which reaction occurs. Such effects discussed here used properly tailor materials via different water electrolysis technologies.
